Working with Colours

Buying clothes that are the wrong colour for you and do not match with anything else in your wardrobe often happens when we buy clothes that are on sale. Colour mistakes are those garments that are still sitting unworn, tucked away in your wardrobe!

Planning what you need in your wardrobe will save you a lot of time and money. Part of this is looking at the colours that suit you.

Check out "
a wardrobe that works for you" - click here to learn how to put a
wardrobe together.
Where to start?

  • When choosing the colours of your clothes, think of the image that wish to convey and make sure the colours complement this image.

  • You also need to consider your own colouring - skin, hair and eyes. There are colours that are naturally easier for you to wear than others and you probably already know instinctively what some of these are.

  • Check out your wardrobe - what is the dominant colour? Do you ever get positive comments on a particular outfit that you wear?

  • If you have answered yes, then you are on the right track when choosing your colours. Your personality plays a major role in the success of the colours which you wear. For example, if you are shy and retiring - avoid dazzling prints.

  • Colour should not be so strong that it dominates you.
Base and Complementary Colours

Having read the section 'create a wardrobe that works' and you have been through the steps of cleaning out your wardrobe, you will be left with a number of colours that dominate and are in one or two main colours.

These are what we call base colours and are the starting point of building a wardrobe. What is left over we classify as complimentary colours. They are an assortment of different colours and work back with your base colours.

Base colours - black, brown, navy, denim, grey, aubergine, olive camel or sand.

Do colours have a meaning?

It is important to remember that colours have different psychological effects.Colours need to be harmony with you're natural colouring. When considering the colours that you wear, generally or on a daily basis, will depend on the occasion, your mood, and the look you wish to project.

For example, if you are going for a job interview, boardroom meeting, formal presentation, sales meeting, a cocktail party, etc.
